Student Energy Consumption Reflexive Diaries

Are we aware of how much energy we consume every day? As part of their energy project, 74 fourth year marketing and Erasmus students took the challenge to observe their daily energy consumption (focusing primarily but not exclusively on electricity) for one week using reflexive diaries. The challenge took place early in the autumn semester. The diaries (adopted from a study by Reid et al 2011), included two sections: the first section was used to keep track of daily habits regarding the types of energy and appliances used, as well as the amount of time spent using them; the second section was used to reflect on, and discuss the habits observed.


The diaries were used to develop self awareness about energy consumption and they reveal the typical daily use of energy from the point of view of a UL student. Here are some examples of the students’ observations:
